BAHHA History

On March 1, 2004 a group of people got together as a response to Texas Ice closing. An ad hoc youth hockey board was formed in May 2004 to look at incorporating, joining USA Hockey and Texoma (now called NTxHL) travel league, developing schedules, notifying players and selecting coaches. Bylaws were drafted for the new association. A party was held in the rink parking lot in which many more contacts were received.

Through much negotiation, Texas Ice’s USA Hockey association number was transferred to our newly formed association. Summer programs, including cross-ice were held at Sharpstown Ice Center. On May 24, 2004, the Bay Area Houston Hockey Association received its Texas 501c3 status. A coaching selection committee was formed to determine fall coaches. Tryouts were held in July at Sharpstown for the 2004-2005 season in hopes that our rink would soon reopen. The season started with games and practices being held at Sharpstown.

On November 4 volunteers geared up to help fix up the rink – painting, building ice, etc. BAHHA officially moved back to our home rink, Space City Ice Station on November 15th, 2004. After eight months, the players were now back home.

The first Hounds Hockey Day was held in the spring of 2005. In addition to this being the annual meeting for BAHHA in which BOD elections occur, the day also consists of numerous skills competitions such as fastest shot, fastest skater, most accurate and goalie shootout.

In the summer of 2005, BAHHA players and parents considered a new name and logo. When the voting and write in voting was counted, we remained the Hounds. A new logo was created and a new jersey style was selected. These were unveiled at our annual meeting.

BAHHA began taking donated and consignment equipment to sell and held the first equipment swap in August 2004. Donations are still accepted and the used equipment sales have been a great way for BAHHA to help offset costs.

BAHHA launched its new website, www.bahha.org, in the fall of 2005. Then in the summer of 2007 a new URL was acquired and the website was redesigned and launched under www.houndsicehockey.org. In the fall of 2007, the first edition of the Newsletter was released.

Since 2004, our membership has grown to over 100 players and BAHHA is the only association in Houston that fields travel, met and JV teams. Some of our recent team accomplishments include:
